( Our Story )

A stripped-down, simplified coffee world in the heart of Spearfish.

Blackbird Espresso is a cozy specialty coffee shop on Main Street, built for the coffee connoisseur and the person who just needs a great cup on the go. From pour-overs to pastries, there is something for everyone here.

How it started

Blackbird opened in March 2014, when Aaron and Tina Neiman brought a minimalist, purist approach to downtown Spearfish. Their goal was simple: introduce a coffee culture focused on pour-overs, fairly traded beans, and drinks made with intention.

The shop is part of a local family of coffeehouses that includes The Green Bean Coffeehouse in Spearfish and Belle Fourche, Harriet & Oak in Rapid City, 8th Avenue Bakery in Belle Fourche, and the seasonal Riverbend Coffee Company kiosk in Hulett, Wyoming.

( The People Behind the Coffee )

No labels. No convention. Just coffee and intention.

Aaron Neiman does not like labels. He finds them confining. He and Tina, his wife and business partner, tend to make their biggest decisions from the gut. Once they commit, her business background and his eye for creative detail carry the idea home.

Their lives revolve around intention, family, health, and a quiet sense of adventure. They are not "foodies," but they like honest, healthy food. They are not "bakers," but they value pure ingredients and scratch-made sweets. They are not "entrepreneurs," exactly — but after getting married, they knew they wanted to build something of their own.

When the original Green Bean Coffeehouse — then called The Tin Cup — came up for sale in Belle Fourche, the adventure began. They did not set out to build a small coffee family across the Black Hills. It just happened, one shop at a time.

( Our Approach )

Riding the third wave

First Wave

Coffee became a household staple — vacuum-packed, instant, and ready to brew. It was about access and convenience.

Second Wave

Specialty shops brought people back out of their kitchens. Chains introduced flavored drinks, syrups, and endless choice.

Third Wave

A return to purity — single-origin beans, focused menus, and craft preparation. That is where Blackbird lives.

( What You'll Find )
